This was the Season of Covid. Winter Park put a bunch of "distancing rules", which helped them stay open. Most indoor spaces were closed except for the biggies...and those had strict occupancy limits. This meant food was "grab-n-go", with you highly encouraged to bring your own and eat either outside or at your car. The lines themselves were re-formulated to allow for decent spacing, and they enforced "must wear a mask in line, and getting on and off the lifts."
In the period before the season, Grand County experienced record fires...the Williams Fork was concerning, but kept under control, whilst the East Troublesome fire ravaged through both Grand Lake and RMNP. WP helped house both the firefighters and displaced residents. That, coupled with a low snow start, meant they didn't open until December.
They started off differentely than the rest of the resorts...no reservations needed. After a few weekends, they figured out this wasn't workable...and did ticket reservations. Weekends, as expected, filled up right away...but fortunately for me, weekdays have stayed mostly empty. And, it looks like you can usually get weekend days either day before or day of as people cancel.
They had an outbreak at the end of January in "employee housing"...more than 100 cases, and didn't publicize it until a couple weeks later. They claimed no transmission to guests, and it looks like their quarantine practices works...but that meant that they were running fewer lifts than expected (with no explanation). The public wasn't very happy with the lack of transparancy.
Here's the current chart of days for our crew...lower than year's past, but hey, we're still skiing...
Lots of mumblings about this upcoming snowstorm...was supposed to start Friday, and go through Monday with multiple FEET possible.
Max had Thursday through Monday off, so we all headed up for some skiing. Forecast for Saturday was for snow; luckilly, reservations opened up on Friday, so Alli and I grabbed 'em! (Max took the day off). Ended up getting about 8"; we left at about 7:30 to try and get some pow before...
Forecast said we were supposed to get snow Wednesday with Thursday being a potential powder day. Went up Tuesday afternoon in hopes that this one panned out...
More storm chasing...we were supposed to get snow tuesday night and wednesday night, so I came up solo. Unfortunately, those didn't pan out...only got a dusting both nights. So, after some strugggles last week, I took the opportunity to work...
Went out with Max and the helmet cam today...did a bunch of bump runs with him, then went tree-sniffing. Conditions getting better, but still low snow. Here's the vid...charts below.
Twas a Jane Day...got some vid of Alli cruising around:
So we were planning on spending most of xmas break up in Fraser but we were worried about how the crowds would be due to WP not requiring reservations. Then, on Dec 15, they...
Cruising around, noticed that Super Gauge had been spinning. Rode the Explorer (the new Eskimo) with a patroller; asked about how close Jane was. She said it was going to open for...
This was perhaps the most empty opening day I've ever experienced. Folks generally stayed away, and it *was* a weekday. Still, nice to get out wik my sweetie.
